Washington is an attractive village off the A283 and close to the A24.
Above it stands the medieval church of St Mary. High above the village is the famous Chanctonbury Ring on top of the South Downs.
The ring suffered extensive damage during the storm of 1987, but it is steadily being replanted.
It has an area of 1200 hectares and a population of 1345.
